The Pet Shop Boys have never made a bad album, but with Nightlife , they started to seem a little worn out, as if they had explored their sound as far as it would go. It may raise a few snooty eyebrows among synth purists, but this twosome has never really been an electronic band in the purest sense

I don't agree with the previous reviewer that this is a boring album, neither is it a failure. I think this is probably (after "Very") the most cohesive PSB album. It's not one you want to play when you need happy music - it's relentlessly downbeat, and the final track, "You Choose", is crushing. At the time of its release this was also the best-sounding of PSB's albums - very clean-sounding, with spacious acoustic guitars and a very subtle electronic sheen. Their recent "Fundamental" album further refines this aesthetic, but continued improvements in mastering and production have certainly made the Pets sound better than ever. Ok, I don't play this album in its entirety very often (there's just too much other music to hear!), but at least half this album contains some very beautiful songs: "London", "E-mail", "Samurai", "Here", "You Choose". Give it a spin sometime on a good system.

"The Pet Shop Boys are not officially allowed to rock." once said Neil Tennant. "I don't like rock n roll." once said Chris Lowe in a song called "Paninaro". With this "Release", the Pet Shop Boys broke their words, exploring Pop Rock and leaving their Electronic roots on the side of the road. After the making of their musical "Closer To Heaven", it seems they got tired and this is the result: it all starts with "Home And Dry": horrible keyboards sounds, standard supermarket beats, and terrible video for the song where a camera follow a couple of rats in the London subway. The Beatlesque "I Get Along" is not bad in itself, but the video is an obvious attempt to redo "Being Boring". "Birthday Boy" and "Love Is A Catastrophe" are probably the weakest songs on this opus. Slow, painful, without any irony or subtility. What a incomfortable feeling when, while on tour, they perform this after a couple of uptempo classics. "E-Mail" and "Samuraï In Automn" are very good on the other hand. "E-Mail" uses a fat Hip Hop beat and a nice orchestra while "Samuraï" is a "Relentless" soundalike Techno track, expressing their thoughts after bitter critics during the "Nightlife" tour. The humor of "The Night I Fell In Love" falls flat after a few listen, and the naive melody is just annoying. "London"'s got some horrible vocoder used on Neil Tennant's voice. Very fashionable after it got over used by Cher and Kid Rock. In all, "Release" is a boring album and it is certainly one of the biggest failure in the Boys career. This 2XCD edition is interesting for the extras. The Electro Mix of "Home And Dry" sounds a lot more better than the original. "Sexy Northerner" should have been on the album and released as a single, but again it didn't happen. "Nightlife", co-produced by David Morales and dropped from the precedent album, is very well done too.
