Aquemini is the third studio album by American hip hop duo Outkast. It was released on September 29, 1998, by LaFace Records. The title is a portmanteau of the two performers' Zodiac signs: Aquarius Big Boi and Gemini André 3000, which is indicative of the album's recurring theme of the differing personalities of the two members. The group recorded the majority of the album in Bobby Brown's Bosstown Recording Studios and Doppler Studios, both in Atlanta, Georgia. Aquemini is the third studio album by OutKast, released on September 29, 1998 through LaFaceArista Records. The album title is a combination of the Zodiac signs Aquarius and Gemini, representing Big Boi and André 3000 respectively. While their sophomore album ATLiens was a complete departure from their Southernplaylistic debut album, Aquemini took their new sound to another level. After Organized Noize produced their entire debut album, OutKast began producing some tracks on their sophomore album, ATLiens, and take on more production for this album, creating more spaced out and soulful sounds. Album 1998 16 Songs. Aquemini saw them really find that dual-speed groove, with a vibe that was half funky superhero soundtrack and half backyard barbecue. The characters in the ultra-suave, jazz-flecked tale SpottieOttieDopaliscious clearly run with both gangstas and squares, but the high point here is Da Art of Storytellin, a vivid and piercing life-and-death story told in two parts. Listen free to OutKast Aquemini Hold On, Be Strong, Return of the G and more. 16 tracks 71:33. A vaguely futuristic, synthesizer-drenched album punctuated with anthemic choruses and bluesy beats, Aquemini addresses numerous topics such as emancipation, drug addiction and problematic relationships, while exploring the bleakest aspects of humanity. In contrast to much of hip hop music in the late 1990s, OutKast did not tone down the regional qualities, like the harmonica break on Rosa Parks and distinctive Atlanta slang and diction throughout. Even compared to their already excellent and forward-looking catalog, OutKast's sprawling third album, Aquemini, was a stroke of brilliance. The chilled-out space-funk of ATLiens had already thrown some fans for a loop, and Aquemini made it clear that its predecessor was no detour, but a stepping stone for even greater ambitions. Some of ATLiens' ethereal futurism is still present, but more often Aquemini plants its feet on the ground for a surprisingly down-home flavor.
