Album

Though flawed, this is a useful two-CD overview of Manu Dibango's recording career. Its arc encompasses pre-Soul Makossa material when he was primarily known only in Africa to much more recent recordings, well after he became more renowned in Europe and North America. The chief flaw is that it can't be determined exactly how old or recent many of the recordings are, since the liner notes don't give dates or other original release information for a good deal of the tracks. Manu Dibango is a fantastic Cameroonian singer and saxaphonist and this 2-CD album compiles 26 of his songs into nearly two and a half hours of sheer listening pleasure. There is a wide range of styles represented: jazz, funk, soul, reggae, makossa, showing Dibango's great versatility. It is all very good stuff. There are few if any weak songs among the lot. The album comes with reasonably informative liner notes, although some info on which album each track is from would have been good too. I highly recommend this. Manu Dibango is a bit of a musical oddity, says culture writer Naima Cochrane. He toured the globe consistently, and collaborated with artists including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Herbie Hancock, and Peter Gabriel, but not many casual music fans know his name. However, almost everyone knows his biggest hit. Emmanuel N'Djoké Manu Dibango 12 December 1933 24 March 2020 was a Cameroonian musician and songwriter who played saxophone and vibraphone.
