In the Wake of Poseidon is the second studio album by English progressive rock group King Crimson, released in May 1970 by Island Records in Europe, Atlantic Records in the United States, and Vertigo Records in New Zealand. The album was recorded during instability in the band, with several personnel changes, but repeats the style of their first album, In the Court of the Crimson King. Recorded in the early months of 1970, King Crimsons sophomore effort, In the Wake of Poseidon saw a dramatic change in the bands lineup but still bore many similarities to In the Court of the Crimson King. Still led by guitarist Robert Fripp, he not only performs on his main instrument but also on the Mellotron and the celesta. Poseidon was Lake's King Crimson swan song, but he almost wasn't needed for the LP. Though the fact's become a peculiar footnote in rock history, emerging talent Elton John was originally hired to sing on the sessions before Fripp changed his mind. Elton had been booked to sing all the songs on Poseidon for 250 as a session singer and as I wasn't familiar with his work, Mark Fenwick of E. gave me a copy of Elton's first album, Fripp wrote in his liner notes to the 1976 compilati. King Crimson spent 1970 as a studio band recording a single 'Catfood' & two albums - 'In the Wake of Poseido' & 'Lizard'. Catfood' was released in March, earning the band an appearance on British BBC TV flagship music show 'Top of the Pops'. Poseidon' followed in May. Upon release, 'Poseidon' reached No. 4 in the UK album chart - one position higher than their debut, & the highest chart placing the band enjoyed in Britain.
