THE SHADOW ran more than 700 episodes during its 17-year run on radio, but there were really only about eight basic plot types. The episodes chosen are by and large quite good although I by no means feel they are a best of the best in this particular category and they feature the trinity of actors - Orson Welles, Bret Morrison and Bill Johnstone - who are collectively felt to be the defininitive Shadow. Bret Morrison 5 May 1912 25 September 1978 was an American actor best known as the voice of the mysterious crusader for law and order on radio's The Shadow. He was also a popular cabaret singer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Morrison entered radio during the 1930s while he was still in Chicago High School. He began with The First Nighter Program. In 1937, he was in the cast of Lucky Girl, a Monday-Friday drama broadcast on WGN in Chicago. During this run, the Shadow was played by Welles, Bret Morrison, Bill Johnstone, John Archer, and Steve Courtleigh. Actresses who played Margo Lane included Moorehead, Marjorie Anderson, Marion Sharkley, Laura Mae Carpenter, Lesley Woods, Grace Matthews, and Gertrude Warner. The show was canceled in 1954, but many episodes were recorded and preserved. Product Information. Radio's greatest crime fighter continues to embody the magic of radio mystery more than 70 years after his debut. I love the Bill Johnstone Shadow years just because of the political atmosphere and the scary things their writers cooked up. Hypnotic Death 2-12-39 Bill Johnstone & Marjorie Anderson I always love episodes when CranstonAllard has to face a fow with hypnotic powers. Friend of Darkness 2-19-39 Bill Johnstone & Marjorie Anderson A wonderful PSA on seeing eye dogs. Evil In the House 11-7-48 Bret Morrison & Grace Matthews. Until Death Do Us Part 3-6-49 Bret Morrison & Grace Matthews. Based on the product, I give it . Next up was Bill Johnstone, and, lastly, Brett Morrison. Morrison was the longest running, but Johnstone & Welles are my personal favorites. The Shadow was an Historic Milestone in Golden Age Radio mystery should never be forgotten for its importance to the genre'. Jonnie King. Excerpt from Decasia, assembled by Bill Morrison 2002.
