Twilight of the Gods is the sixth studio album by Swedish extreme metal band Bathory. It continues the exploration of the newly created Viking metal style, and also displays heavy epic doom and classical influences it is titled after an opera by Wagner. It is a mid-tempo, more acoustic album than previous Bathory releases, though it follows on from the Hammerheart album. Of significance is Quorthon's total control of the album, playing all electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, bass, and drum. Twilight of the Gods. With this album the approach to Viking Metal continued, a genre that the group helped to create a few years earlier in the Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart records, showing new influences from Doom Metal and Classical Music: the title itself is taken from a work by Richard Wagner. In the original intentions of Quorthon, this should have been the last Bathory record. As for the lyrics, the album deals with Viking themes concerning the Norse mythology, but unlike the previous one, in this album there are more metaph. Type: Full-length. Still, when removed from this chronological experiment, there's no denying that Twilight of the Gods is one heck of a heavy metal album. Maybe it could have used a little more of the old-school black metal simplicity of early Bathory, but the band's forward momentum was such at this juncture in their career that a look back, however brief, was simply not in the cards
